Privacy Policy

Simple, low-data, and local-first.

Thread is designed to work without creating an account. We keep collection light, avoid personal profiles, and only use data that helps the app function, improve, and stay reliable.

What we collect

Data stored on your device

Thread stores gameplay progress, streak history, settings, and reminder choices on your device so the app can open quickly and work offline.

Private iCloud sync

If iCloud sync is active in the current version of the app, your settings, puzzle history, and in-progress daily game may be synced through your private iCloud account using CloudKit. This data is tied to your Apple account by Apple, not by an in-app Thread account.

Anonymous usage analytics

If analytics is enabled in the app, we may receive privacy-light event data such as when the app opens, whether a tutorial was completed, when a daily puzzle is started or finished, clue counts, solve durations, reminder prompt outcomes, share taps, app version, and device class such as iPhone or iPad.

This event stream is session-scoped and is not intended to create a named or personal profile of you.

Anonymous daily result aggregates

If anonymous ranking or aggregate sharing is enabled in the app, we may receive a privacy-light daily result containing the puzzle ID, date, score or miss result, app version, platform, and an anonymous installation identifier used only to avoid duplicate counts for the same puzzle.

Notifications

If you allow notifications, Thread stores your reminder preference and may schedule local reminders on your device. Local reminders do not require a remote push service.

What we do not collect

  • Your name, postal address, phone number, or contacts.
  • Your Apple ID, personal email address, or private iCloud credentials.
  • Your location, advertising identifier, or cross-app tracking profile.
  • Your raw guess text as a searchable personal history.
  • Payment details. Thread currently has no in-app purchases or ads.

How data is used

  • To save your progress, streaks, settings, and reminder preferences.
  • To keep your personal Thread history in sync across your own Apple devices when iCloud sync is enabled.
  • To understand puzzle difficulty, completion rates, and reminder impact in aggregate.
  • To improve app quality, onboarding, reliability, and future updates.

How data is shared

We do not sell personal data. Where needed, data may be processed by service providers that help run the app, such as Apple for iCloud or App Store infrastructure, and our own hosted backend providers for anonymous analytics or aggregate gameplay reporting.

We do not use Thread data to track you across other companies’ apps or websites.

Your choices

  • You can turn daily reminders on or off in the app.
  • You can disable analytics in the app if that setting is available in your version.
  • You can disable anonymous aggregate sharing in the app if that setting is available in your version.
  • You can clear local progress from the app’s Settings screen.
  • You can remove the app from your device at any time.
